Duane Chun, who taught first aid, said he did it both for himself and his students.
Chun, the band director for Buena High School in Sierra Vista, travels more than 75 miles to Tucson three times a month to volunteer.
"It just helps with a nightmare I have that we're in some horrible bus crash.This is my way of reassuring myself," Chun said.
The Red Cross' White credited the modest $10 fee for the high turnout.Such classes usually cost more than twice as much, he said.
In addition to the Red Cross, which spent $25,000 and one year coordinating the event, the Community Partnership of Southern Arizona, Carondelet Health Network, Casino Del Sol, Medtronic Physio-Control, and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe also contributed.
