   According to Shawn Chen, Portal Software's network administrator, Infranet is the industry leader when it comes to speed and fulfillment. "We have no peer in terms of performance."
   
   To better support their products, Portal Software launched an Oracle-based ERP system to automate internal business processes. As part of the transformation, Portal's IT team was faced with the challenge of managing and protecting the ERP database. To ensure top performance, scalability and ease of management, the company chose to invest in a Storage Area Network (SAN) backup strategy. In anticipation of future storage needs, Portal looked to Adexis to assist in the implementation of the SAN to centralize the management and automate backups of the company's critical databases.

   "Our future is one of continued growth," said Chen. "We see future opportunities in data storage and in the strategic management of our information. Some may think of us only as a software company, but internally, we're always striving for something much bigger."
   
   "We were trying to backup more than our devices could handle," said Chen. "Even with reprioritizing and creative scheduling, backup wasn't being done well. At that point, we decided to implement a SAN to consolidate our storage and improve backup."
   
   The Adexis SAN solution would allow Portal to better leverage the 13 terabytes of information requiring backup. "The majority of the data being backed up is production data critical to our business," said Chen. "Most of the information resides on UNIX infrastructure servers. We also store some web applications and engineering development data as well as large databases."
   
   Integration Is Key
   
   Portal's advancement from a SCSI environment to Fibre Channel involved a number of manufacturers – making interoperability a significant issue.

   "We couldn't achieve this amount of throughput over a LAN that we now receive with the SANbased backup," said Chen. "The real difference comes out in the time needed for backup. Prior to the SAN we couldn't meet our eight-hour backup window. That's not a problem now."
   
   The new Adexis - Portal SAN-based centralized backup solution significantly improves backup performance and reduces the company's overall operating costs - not only through greater efficiency, but by maximizing utilization of storage hardware as well. By moving backup operations to the SAN, Portal now realizes reduced LAN traffic and has enabled LAN servers to focus on driving applications and serving data to users.
