A sendoff concert for Mei-Ann Chen
    ...
Mei-Ann Chen, who for the past five years has charmed Portland audiences with her verve and vivacity, and sustained the sterling reputation of the Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) Orchestra with her outstanding conducting abilities and progressive choices of repertoire, will soon be taking leave of us.She was recently picked to be a staff conductor at the Atlanta Symphony, and will work with respected Chief Conductor Robert Spano.

While this will be a big boost to Ms. Chen's reputation, it will be a big loss for the City of Roses. We came to love her energy and unique style, and she continued to build the already high reputation of the PYP, whose inception in 1924 makes it the nation's oldest ensemble of its kind.It is also arguably the best, and Mei-Ann Chen has maintained the high quality and esteem the PYP enjoys.

She will take the PYP on an extensive tour of Asia, starting with her home town of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Mei-Ann Chen will begin a two-year conducting fellowship with the ASO in September.
    ...
Chen, a native of Taiwan, started playing the violin at 7.She moved to the United States in 1991 to study violin and conducting at the New England Conservatory, and earned a doctorate at the University of Michigan.

Now 33, she has appeared with orchestras from Seattle to Jacksonville. For the past five years she's been music director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic in Oregon, where the ensemble won a distinguished award for creative programming.

Her biggest career boost came in 2005, when she walked away with the top prize at an international conducting competition in Denmark.

For women conductors, the chance to lead a major orchestra was all but impossible until recent years. And although Marin Alsop will begin her tenure with the Baltimore Symphony in the fall ,- the first maestra in history appointed music director at a top U.S. orchestra ,- Chen and the ASO remain in the vanguard of integrating the podium.
    ...
The American Symphony Orchestra League will provide a $30,000 grant to the ASO to help cover her salary and will give Chen a $5,000 stipend for career-enhancing travel.
