   John Chen, BenQ's UK MD, says the company's long-term goal is to establish itself, like Samsung, as a consumer electronics brand in its own right in the UK and Europe, with a top three market position in all markets and technology sectors.

   BenQ will be looking to work closely with operators, building on its first steps into the market as a contract manufacturer for O2's own-brand X-series. 'Our strategy has always been about working with operators, and now are looking to get established in the UK,' says John Chen, BenQ's UK MD.
   
   In the long term, Lee says, instead of simply cutting Siemens' costs to increase profitability on mass-market, low-end handsets, BenQ plans a riskier strategy of building market share by focusing on mid to high-end handsets. He claims these would be delivered with a much quicker time-to-market by using Siemens' existing R&D capabilities and by integrating BenQ's and Siemens' technology patents.
   
   'We believe that the only way to increase revenues is to introduce high-end products faster and quicker,' he says. 'There's more opportunity in the upside of a joint team - a more efficient, faster time-to-market.' Few in Siemens Mobile would disagree.
