James Chen, Wireless Product Marketing Manager for the Communications Business Group, told 802.11 Planet a little about the strategy Marvell wants to take with these new chips: "We want to build them into very consumer oriented devices. PDAs, consoles/XBoxs, cell phones -- who knows what else is coming."

The two-chip combo's above are "the only two chips you need to buy" according to Chen. They include a power amplifier to help extend range when needed. He says the tighter integration of components will drive down the price.

The Libertas chipsets include a number of advances according to the company. Among them are high-rate bandwidth mode of 22Mbps, similar to that offered by the Texas Instruments ACX100 chip; a digital signal processor (DSP) chip that helps counteract multipath issues (Libertas is "four times better" than other chips at tolerating multipath problems, according to Chen); smart power management using the integrated power amplifier; and interference immunity so access points can be placed closer together meaning fewer black-out spots.

Libertas supports a full range of the latest 802.11-based security, including the WEP-improving Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP), 802.1X and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) support via dedicated hardware, and eventually the MAC layer security of 802.11i (when it becomes available).

The 88W8500 baseband/MAC chip for access points will also support 802.3 (10/100 Ethernet), so products using it can be tied quickly to the wired backbone of a network as well.

Marvell will have a few reference designs available using the chips. They will include designs for client like MiniPCI, PC Cards, and Compact Flash cards; a plain vanilla access point; and also a home wireless gateway design for what Marvell considers the hot market segment of the moment.

Chen says, "The [home gateway] products out there [have] five to six chips and they're expensive. Our reference design uses the 2-chip design [and] provides more Ethernet ports. We show people how it's done."

Reference designs using the new chips will be available late this year.

The new baseband/MAC chips are currently in sampling mode with Marvell's strategic partners.

Chen says to expect high-volume availability in the beginning of 2003.
