Harry Chen, M.S., interventional radiologist at Phoenixville Hospital, successfully performed the first injection of particles through UAE at Phoenixville Hospital two weeks ago.
"UAE is a method by which you place particles inside an artery which blocks the blood supply to the fibroid," said Chen, this week.

Chen said that the typical candidate is from 30 to 45 years old and typically already a mother. A patient's suitability for the procedure depends on whether the non-cancerous tumors are located on the bulk of muscle, or preferably, on the surface of the uteruses many muscles.
He said that childbearing is not encouraged soon after those who recently underwent the procedure.
The physician also said that he can't predict in advance whether a particular patient will benefit from the UAE procedure, rather than performing a hysterectomy, although patients in the past have successfully conceived following the procedure.
Chen recommends that those who are experiencing pain or excessive bleeding to first seek consultation with a gynecologist. He expects that from 12 to 30 of the UAE procedures will take place at the Phoenixville Hospital during the next year.
