Dr. Frank Chen joined the Palo Alto Medical Foundation's Sports Medicine Department in September 2003. Previously, he was a partner at the Mission Peak Orthopedic Medical Group in Fremont, California, where he served as team physician for Ohlone College and was actively involved in the care of high school and college athletes, including college "All Stars" at the East-West Shrine Game.
At Brown University, Dr. Chen received both his bachelor of science degree with honors and his medical degree with high honors. Upon completion of his internship in general surgery at the New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Chen underwent orthopedic surgery residency training at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York, a nationally renowned orthopedic institution. His training included work in orthopedic basic science research and orthopedic traumatology at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. These experiences, coupled with the care of athletes from the U.S. Open Professional Tennis Tournament, Women's Professional Volleyball Association and New York City high school football teams, enhanced his interest in athletic medicine and reconstructive surgery.
Following residency, Dr. Chen completed a sports medicine and shoulder/elbow reconstructive surgery fellowship at the University of Southern California (USC). This experience included the clinical and surgical management of both collegiate and professional athletes. While at USC, he served as team physician for NCAA Division I men's football, basketball and baseball, as well as women's basketball and soccer.
Dr. Chen is currently assistant team physician for the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer, and has also served on the medical staff for the Oakland Raiders as well as USA National Rugby. He is also team physician for Gunn High School in Palo Alto and helps to take care of many other local high school and college athletes.
Dr. Chen's current professional interests include sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, including surgical reconstruction of the shoulder, elbow, and knee.
Dr. Chen is married with two children and enjoys swimming, basketball, soccer, music and traveling. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
