Violinist Ellen Chen-Livingston joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra first violin section at the beginning of the 1998-99 season. Prior to her engagement with the PSO, she had been a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
While a student at Juilliard, Ms. Chen-Livingston served as concertmaster of the New York String Seminar Orchestra under Jaime Laredo. She has also participated in the Aspen, Tanglewood and Breckenridge Music Festivals. Ellen received both Bachelor and Master degrees from Juilliard and has studied with Cho-Liang Lin, members of the Juilliard Quartet, and Felix Galimir.

First Violin
Ellen Chen joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra first violin section in 1998. Previously she had been a member of the Columbus Symphony and New World Symphony.
She was appointed by Jaime Laredo to serve as concertmaster of New York String Seminar Orchestra, performing two concerts in Carnegie Hall. As a participant of the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colorado, she performed the Barber Violin Concerto. She also has participated in the Tanglewood and Aspen music festivals.
A recipient of the Taiwanese United Fund Scholarship, Chen graduated from The Juilliard School with both bachelor's and master's degrees. At Juilliard she was under the tutelage of Cho-Liang Lin. She studied chamber music with members of the Juilliard Quartet and the late Felix Galimir.
Ellen Chen maintains a private studio in her home in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh.
