The lab's director, David Chen of Dalhousie's department of electrical and computer engineering, says the facility is another dynamic development in Atlantic Canada's burgeoning research and development culture. "Our goal is to make this Microwave and Wireless Laboratory a leading international research facility," Dr. Chen says. "The lab allows us to do research that will help create new wireless applications and provide high-quality training in wireless and space technologies. It will also help us attract more researchers to the Atlantic region."
In co-operation with the Canadian Microelectronics Corporation, Dr. Chen and his team of more than 15 researchers have already developed improved transceiver structure and smart-antenna technologies that will help increase the efficiency and performance of wireless systems whose user numbers are rising dramatically.
"Our resources are now available for any wireless research and development in the region," Dr. Chen says.
