The Newnham College Chamber Choir is proud to announce the release of its first CD: Songs of Welcome.
    ...
The CD was recorded in March this year in the Old Labs in Newnham gardens, and is available from the College Development Office for £12 plus £2.50 for postage and packing, or directly from the Porters' Lodge for £12.

    The music

Songs of Welcome is a varied and fascinating selection of music composed for women's voices, both unaccompanied and with accompaniment by piano, harp or harmonium.
    ...
The choir of 22 is directed by Sarah MacDonald, Director of Music at Newnham (and at Selwyn College where Newnham Choral Scholars sing in the Chapel Choir).

    ...
They are accompanied by Chen Chen (piano, for the Rachmaninov and some of the Bridge), Anne Page (harmonium, for the Faure), and Tanya Hughton (harp, for the Holst).
    ...
Unusually for Cambridge, the College Choir has always consisted of both Junior and Senior members of the College, and it is not attached to a College Chapel, since the College does not have its own Chapel. Since the appointment of Sarah MacDonald as Director of Music in the College in 2001, the Choir has met regularly, and has given numerous performances for the Raleigh Society, for formal College occasions, and for the prestigious Cambridge Music Festival.
    ...
Some of the repertoire the Choir has sung in the recent past includes Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols and The Golden Vanity, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Vivaldi's Gloria, and Brahms.
    ...
Opus 44 Lieder und Romanzen, as well as various selections of lighter music, including madrigals, part-songs, and barber-shop arrangements. This is the Choir's first CD.

Sarah MacDonald, Director of Music, came to Cambridge from her native Canada in 1992 as Organ Scholar of Robinson College, after studying piano, organ, singing, and conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she was a student of Leon Fleisher, Marek Jablonski, and John Tuttle. Sarah read for a degree in Music at Cambridge, taking her BA in 1995 and her MA in 1999.
    ...
Chen Chen (piano) is a medical student at Girton College, Cambridge. She holds a University Instrumental Award, and studies with John Barstow at the Royal College of Music (RCM). Chen has appeared as concerto soloist under Sir Simon Rattle in Birmingham Symphony Hall, with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra at the Beaumaris Festival, and with the RCM Junior Department Symphony Orchestra. She has given numerous solo and chamber music recitals throughout the UK, and has recently won the Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition.
    ...
Choir. She read for a degree in Music at Selwyn College, Cambridge where she was also a Choral Exhibitioner.
    ...
Anne Page (harmonium) has long been resident in Cambridge, having come to Europe from Perth, Australia for advanced study on the organ with Peter Hurford and Marie-Claire Alain.
    ...
In the early part of the 20th century, Holst became interested in Hindu literature and philosophy, and took a course in Sanskrit at University College, London.
    ...
The third set of Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda (the oldest of the primary texts of Hinduism, composed c1500BC, and translated here by Holst himself) were given their first performance in Blackburn in 1911.
    ...
Frank Bridge (1879-1941) studied violin and composition (under Stanford) at the Royal College of Music.
    ...
Two of the part-songs on this recording (Golden Slumbers and Hence Care) were written in 1922 for Victor Harris, and the St Cecilia Club in New York, Bridge having paid a number of visits to America to conduct his music.

This recording was made in the Old Labs, the science laboratories at the bottom of the gardens, which were originally opened in 1879 for the use of Newnham students, as women were not allowed to attend the University laboratories with men. The Old Labs were converted into a performing arts space for the College in 1999.

A Choir has existed on and off in Newnham College for much of the College's history, run by various keen undergraduate musicians over the years.
