   Taiwanese violist Brian Chen (also known as "Che-Yen Chen") is principal violist of the San Diego Symphony.He captured the first prize of the 2003 William Primrose Viola Competition and "Yuri Bashmet prize" of the 2003 Lionel Tertis Viola Competition and has performed throughout United States and abroad.An advocate of chamber music, Mr. Chen is a founding member of the Formosa Quartet, was a member of Chamber Music Society Two at Lincoln Center, a Jupiter Chamber Player, and took part in Musicians from Marlboro and Musician from Ravinia tours.His festival appearances include Chamber Music International, Marlboro, Primrose, and Ravinia festivals, La Jolla SummerFest, and Mainly Mozart.A four-time winner of the National Viola Competition in Taiwan, he came to the United States and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School.

   First prize winner of the 2003 William Primrose Viola Competition and "Yuri Bashmet prize" winner of the 2003 Lionel Tertis Viola Competition, twenty-five year old violist Brian Chen was born in Taipei, Taiwan, where he studied with Ben Lin, and made his solo recital debut at age 10.A four-time winner of National Viola Competition in Taiwan, he came to the U.S. in 1992 and was accepted to The Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Michael Tree, Karen Tuttle, and Joseph dePasquale.Mr. Chen received a Master's degree from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Paul Neubauer.At age 21, he joined The Florida Orchestra directed by maestro Jahja Ling as the principal viola.An active chamber musician, Mr. Chen has performed with members of Guarneri, Juilliard, Cleveland, Mendelssohn, and Orion string quartet, and has collaborated with such artists as Jaime Laredo, Chiao-Liang Lin, and Felix Galimir.

   Mr. Chen is currently a member of the CMS2 program at the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center.He has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad, including Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, Barge Music, the 92nd Street Y in New York, the Library of Congress in D.C., Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, National Concert Hall in Taipei, and Wigmore Hall in London.He was a participant at Ravinia and Marlboro Festival, and appears frequently with Musicians from Marlboro and Musicians from Ravinia.Mr. Chen is currently a member of Avalon String Quartet, the winner of ARD Munich Competition, Concert Artist Guild Competition, and Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.
