Sylvain Chemtob is a neonatologist and pharmacologist, whose focus of research has been in physiology and pharmacology of reactive oxygen species and prostanoids on brain and eye vasculature of the developing subject. He is professor of Pediatrics, Ophthalmology and Pharmacology at Université de Montréal, and is author of more than 120 articles reported in major journals (eg. PNAS, Circulation, AJP), as well as inventor of 6 patents. He has trained so far 18 graduate students and 13 post-graduate fellows (MDs and PhDs). His research has been supported by major national Canadian (MRC/CIHR) and foreign (US [NIH]) grants as well as foundations (eg. HSFC, MOD). He has been a recipient of numerous awards including the Jonathan Ballon Award from the Heart & Stroke Foundation (1994), the Award of Excellence in Research from the Foundation for Research on Children's Diseases (1996), the André Dupont Prize from the Club de Recherche Clinique du Québec (2000); he is also a recipient of a Canada Research Chair. He has been member of various scientific committees at the CIHR (currently chair of CI-A), the NIH and the FRSQ, and is on the Advisory Board of IHDCYH of the CIHR, and also serves as consulting member of major Canadian biotechnology companies.
