Zeina Chemali, a visiting assistant professor of behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at the American University of Beirut, said that taking care of a patient with Alzheimer's is multi-disciplinary work, involving a doctor, a nurse and a social worker.

"The family must also be properly positioned to take care of the elderly," Chemali said, "because the most important thing is the way you take care of the elderly, and the people who work with an Alzheimer's patient must really understand that the person they are working with is elderly, with dementia, but still a complete human being."
The family as a whole needs to support the patient, Chemali said, adding that the burden of Alzheimer's disease is also very heavy for caregivers.
"The caregivers need to have another support system," Chemali said, "and that other support system is a social worker that could come home and visit the patient often."
Chemali said that it was always better to keep Alzheimer's patients with their caregivers. Yet, she said, there are some factors that might lead an Alzheimer patient's caregiver to put a patient in a nursing home.
