    Tuesday , the school board also appointed Jayne Chelberg of Foster City as the next principal of Machado Elementary School. She will be replacing Marybeth Slane , who will be the first principal of Rice Canyon Elementary , which is do to open this summer.

    Chelberg has been principal of three different elementary schools since 1992 and is currently the principal of Ralston Middle School in the Bay area. Her career in education began in 1975 , according to a district press release.

    Both principals will begin their tenure at the beginning of the 2001-2002 fiscal year in July.

    In other action , trustees awarded construction contracts totaling $ 18.9 million for the new Cottonwood Canyon Middle School and $ 8.7 million for Canyon Lake Elementary Schools. The district's two newest schools will be adjacent to each other off Railroad Canyon Road. The Feb. 26 groundbreaking ceremony for the schools was delayed due to rain and has since been scheduled for April 3 at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Cottonwood Hills and Lost roads.
