   The Center will be directed by Isaam Cheikh, M.D., F.A.C.F., F.A.C.P., Chief of Endocrinology at Union Memorial. Dr. Cheikh will lead a team of professionals to include: Caesar Shediac, M.D., F.A.C.P., endocrinologist at Union Memorial; Darby Russell Schaub, M.S., C.R.N.P., C.D.E., diabetes nurse educator and adult nurse practitioner for Union Memorial; and Monica Dorsey-Smith, RD, LD, CDE, Clinical Chief Dietician, also for the hospital.

   "Looking down the road, The Diabetes Care Center will utilize the special areas of expertise at Union Memorial such as eye care, podiatry, neurological problems and vascular diseases," said Dr. Cheikh.
   
   The Diabetes Care Center will offer educational services to include a comprehensive diabetes education program plus individual assessments covering: general information about the diabetes disease process; coping skills; nutrition counseling and meal planning; glucose monitoring; medication and/or insulin instruction; exercise; acute and chronic complication; foot care; other preventative care; and strategies to help manage diabetes successfully. Class or individual instruction will be given by a certified diabetes educator, while additional expertise will be offered by an exercise physiologist, a clinical pharmacist and a licensed professional counselor.
   
   Named to the Baltimore's Best Endocrinologists list, Dr. Cheikh is board-certified in internal medicine and endocrinology/metabolism and is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Maryland. He has also served as Chairman of the Maryland Endocrine Society and currently supervises medical students and residents in Union Memorial's outpatient medical clinic.
