Ed Cheikh, owner of Houseworks, says, "If you appreciate art, you will like these things around your house," pointing out an array of designer housewares, lighting and furnishings in his Castleton-area store.
Cheikh says the store focuses on fine design at a price.
"What we want to do is get more good design to the masses rather than to a special few," he says. "Therefore, we don't seek out items that are extremely high priced."
Cheikh likes to differentiate between contemporary and modern style.
"Contemporary to me is something with a short shelf life, something that is trendy, has a limited life span in terms of style. Modern is more timeless in style, clean lined, able to be put in several different room settings. For instance, you can take a room with antique accessories and put in a very clean-lined leather sofa and it looks great - it makes everything look better."
Demand for modern design is growing in Indianapolis, he says. "Everybody, even the traditional furniture stores, are opening areas that include modern," says Cheikh. -
