Geoffrey Kariuki Chege (Kenyan) is going to undertake an MSc in Conservation Biology at the University of Kent at Canterbury. On completion of his BSc in Wildlife Management at Moi University, he joined Lewa Wildlife Conservancy as a Research Officer, where he monitors black and white rhinos. He is also Field Coordinator for Zebras in Kenya for the Earth Watch Institute. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is located within AWF's Samburu Heartland and is a unique operation - being the first privatized conservancy in Kenya and being watched by a global audience. Geoffrey is a self-motivated researcher who enjoys spending most of his time in the field. He authored the II Ngwesi Group Ranch White Rhino Management Plan, which is being reviewed by the Kenya Wildlife Service, and if approved will form the basis for translocation of white rhinos to the community owned group ranch. He also authored the Black Rhino management plan for II Ngwensi Group ranch, which led to the introduction of one black rhino to the ranch and will be used for future translocations to the ranch. Chege was a member of the team that drew up the 5-year Conservation and Management Strategy Plan of the Black Rhino in Kenya and has been responsible for on-going vegetation management at Lewa. Geoffrey's research programme will focus on habitat use and effect of browse availability on the diet of Black Rhinos. On completion of his studies Geoffrey hopes to return to Lewa where he will continue to apply his skills to the research and community departments. -
