Chelius Howard Carter was named for his mother's oldest brother: 2nd Lt. Chelius Clifton Howard, who as an 8th Air Force fighter pilot with the 364th Fighter Group; 385th Fighter Squadron, was Killed in Action on 21 March 1945, while strafing Achmer Airdrome in north Germany. He served on the "Memphis Belle" Memorial Association's Board of Directors from 1986-1998; was President from 1990-1992.
