   James William Cheeks , formerly of Oxford , died Sept. 18. He was born Feb. 12 , 1919. He graduated from Stewart School and received a bachelor's degree in Education from Miami University in 1941. He later earned a master's degree from the University of Illinois.
   
   During the early years of World War II , Cheeks worked as a civilian instructor for the U.S. Air Force. In 1943 , he received his pilot's training under a civilian program at Crete , Neb..
   
   He was the first of six pilots selected to go to Ethiopia to re-establish and train the Imperial Ethiopian Air Force. During this time , he was promoted to Major and designated as Emperor Haile Selassie's personal pilot.
   
   Burial was at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood , Calif..
