The camp's program director, Kent Cheek, has managed diabetes since childhood.A resident of the Pickerington area and a firefighter and paramedic for the Madison Township Fire Department, Cheek began attending Camp Hamwi as a youth and eventually became a camp counselor.
Cheek's 11-year-old daughter, Leslie, also a diabetic, has attended Camp Hamwi for the past five years.

She talks about camp a lot," Cheek said."She makes friends here, learns a lot."
Cheek said his two sons, ages 9 and 4, have also been tested for diabetes but have not yet been diagnosed.Cheek said his daughter helps educate her fellow campers about how to keep diabetes under control.
"She puts a kid's perspective on it," he said.
