Colonel John D. Cheek retired USAF passed away in Athens, Georgia on Tuesday, May 21st. He was born on August 19, 1919 in Telfair County, Georgia to Fannie and George T. Cheek. He graduated from Abraham Baldwin and joined the Army Air Corps on Oct. 3, 1941. He completed pilot training in May 1942. Upon completing pilot training he was selected to serve as a flight instructor in various aircraft. He proudly served his country in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He received numerous military honor citations and was awarded the Purple Heart for action in Korea. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He attended Mars Hill Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 23, 2002, at 3:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, WEST. -
