   Jill Cheek, 51, of Carrboro, has been an attorney with the N.C. Department of Justice for more than 20 years. Ms. Cheek represents the state in death penalty appeals. During a 16-year stretch, Ms. Cheek said she argued 37 cases before the state Supreme Court and only lost two.

   Jill Cheek, an attorney who lives in Carrboro but is an appellate lawyer for the N.C. Department of Justice, was rumored to have applied to be a superior court judge last year. She said she does not intend to ask the governor to consider her for the judgeship this year.
