SHIRLEY CHEECHOO
Dr. Cheechoo appreciates the importance of diversity and artistic expression in Ontario communities.She teaches drama workshops to Native youth across Ontario and is the founder of Debahjehmujig Theatre Group.She is also the founder and President of Weengushk Film Institute, an artist focused, film training centre dedicated to unlocking the creative potential of Aboriginal youth and persons of diversity.
Dr. Cheechoo is an actor, writer, producer, director and visual-artist.She is the first person from a First Nation to write, produce, direct and act in a feature length dramatic film in Canada, entitled "Bearwalker (aka Backroads)".Dr. Cheechoo has won many awards for her work including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress at several film festivals.
In 1992, Dr. Cheechoo gained national theatre attention with her play "Path With No Moccasins".She has also appeared on several Canadian film and television series including "The Rez" and in 1998, her directorial debut won acclaim for the short film, "Silent Tears".In 2002, Dr. Cheechoo was named Independent Film Maker of the Year at the Arizona International Film Festival.
She was appointed to the Ontario Trillium Foundation Board of Directors in September 2004.
