   Mervin Cheechoo, President After graduating from Briercrest Bible College, Marvin pastored his home church in Moose Factory for thirteen years. Now residing in Sudbury, ON with his wife Carol Ann and family, he assists in pastoral leadership. He has been on the board of Rising Above since its inception and President since 1996.

   The three and a half day conference began with an official welcome from the community leadership followed by Rising Above President, Mervin Cheechoo addressing the audience on "The Problem Among Us: Native people and their culture, Native people in crisis, Native people and Christianity."
   ...
   That evening, Mervin closed out the day by calling people to repent to God for their sinful responses to their abuse issues and not turning to Him. Again the stage area was full of people desiring to repent.
   
   Each day of the conference three informative workshops were offered; Parenting by Mervin; How to Counsel a Sexually Abused Person by Selma Poulin; and Suicide and Grief by Gary Quequish.

   As at every Rising Above conference, Mervin closed by speaking into the misconceptions of God many have as a result of their experiences at the hands of their earthly father or spiritual leaders and vividly portrayed how much our heavenly Father's heart is for His children.
