Blue Ridge President Pete Checkovich has been approached by Ressler in hopes of partnering with the preservation group.

Checkovich said this week that the college's Board of Governors is considering a list of possibilities and that the Crockett-Porterfield House could be among them.

"That's one that I think that we're talking about at this point," he said of the property.

The board has three priorities in its search for a new location, Checkovich said. The school's first priority is to stay in downtown Martinsburg. If that's not possible, he said, it would like to stay in the city or in Berkeley County.

The resolution was good news for Blue Ridge CTC President Pete Checkovich.

"This is phase two of our building plan," Checkovich said following the announcement. "We are extremely pleased with this news."

New facilities are desperately needed at the school, and this funding could help make them a reality, he said. The school presently leases space from the Berkeley County Commission, but its lease expires in less than five years. The school is experiencing serious growing pains, with enrollments growing faster than at any other community college in West Virginia.

Checkovich said he will meet with members of the school's board of governors Wednesday to compile a list of possible locations for a new facility.

As the most rapidly-growing community college in the state, it is quickly outgrowing its present quarters, President Pete Checkovich explained in an earlier interview.

From 2005 to 2006 alone, the school's enrollment increased by more than 10 percent, Checkovich said. In 2005, 1,711 students attended the school. By the following year, those numbers climbed to 1,953. It was the largest growth spurt seen at any of West Virginia's 10 community colleges.

"Ours was the largest rate of growth by a long shot," Checkovich said at the time.

But the campus has seen more changes than just an increase in enrollment over the past year.
