Joseph P. Checklick Joseph P. Checklick, a longtime Greenport resident, died at Riverhead Nursing Home on Dec. 11 after a long illness. He was 88.

Mr. Checklick was born to Adolph and Frances (Melnick) Checklick on March 20, 1913, in Mahwah, N.J. After serving in the Army during World War II, he worked on oyster boats in Greenport waters and worked at Szeszko's Store, which was owned by his wife's family. Mr. Checklick was also a security guard on Plum Island for over 20 years. He was an avid fisherman, bowler and dart player according to his family, and a charter member of Island's End Golf Club, where he once scored a hole-in-one. He was a past commander of the Burton Potter American Legion Post (1948) and a past treasurer.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Estella (nÉe Szeszko); his children, Joann Dors of Palm Coast, Fla.; Helen Ryan of Greenport; Michael, of East Marion; Peter, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; his sister, Nellie Slicker of Mahwah, N.J.; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by son Joseph Jr. in 1952.

Visitation was Dec. 14 at S.B. Horton Funeral Home in Greenport, where both American Legion and parish prayer services were offered that evening.
