Erika Checkley of the Kelowna Yacht Club says there are more spaces available in the club's summer learn to sail program.
...
"For parents looking for a fascinating and unusual activity for their child this summer, you can't beat learning how to sail," said Erika Checkley, the Kelowna Yacht Club's youth and education coordinator. "Lots of kids go to camp, play soccer or baseball, but there is not that many who learn to sail."
The Kelowna Yacht Club doesn't make a profit from its summer camps. The money raised by registration fees go to the costs of running the club, purchasing sail boats for kids and paying the licensed instructors.
"The beginner classes for children age five to nine are only $85 and run three hours each afternoon for the week," Checkley said. "You can do the math. Once they have the basics down they can take the next level which is two weeks long."
Checkley adds that anyone can take the club's learn to sail program with the club supplying the boats, licensed instructors and a safe, supervised learning environment.
"The kids have a lot of fun," she said. "They get wet, play games and come away with a real sense of accomplishment."
The Kelowna Yacht Club's learn to sail program is part of the club's mandate to try and grow the sport, which often turns into a lifelong passion. There are other courses as well after the learn to sail program such as first level certification.
"We have advanced classes with some pretty fast boats and if an adult wants to learn (there are) keelboat classes for those who think they'd like to have their own big sailboat someday," said Checkley.
There are still some spots available in the club's learn to sail program for children from five to nine and for older children.
Anyone who wants more information can either call the Kelowna Yacht Club at 762-3310 or visit the club's website at www.KelownaYachtClub.com.
"We love to talk about sailing, show our boats and gear and explain what it's all about," said Checkley.
