   In the Private Category the Turfgrass Excellence Award was bestowed upon Nick Checklenis of Silver Creek Valley Country Club (San Jose, CA). During his tenure at SCVCC, he has established a premier venue that has added to the positive golf experience for club members and their guests. Checklenis credits his success to his staff at Silver Creek Valley Country Club. "You are only as good as those who work for you," says Checklenis. "Luckily I have a staff that possesses longevity and commitment, and because of that, we have been successful. I am honored and very appreciative of receiving this special award."
   
   Checklenis was deeply involved with a major redesign and reconstruction of Silver Creek Valley, working closely with nationally recognized course designer Michael Strantz.

   Checklenis has also installed a sophisticated computerized system that increases irrigation efficiency while enhancing course conditions.
   
   Under his tenure at Silver Creek Valley Country Club he has hosted qualifiers for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the Buick Scramble, and his course has been a featured site for the televised Toyota Team Championship Matches as well as The Hooked on Golf Television Show.
   
   Checklenis will add this Turfgrass Excellence Award to other previous honors he's received including the National Environmental Steward Award from the GCSAA and the Merit Award for "Best Greens in the USA" by Seed Research. He is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program and his course is one of only 19 certified Audubon Sanctuary sites within the State of California. A graduate of De Anza Community College, Checklenis is Certified in Horticulture with an emphasis on Turf Grass Management from Foothill College. Prior to his tenure at Silver Creek Valley Country Club Checklenis was in involved with course layout and construction at Cheju Golf Club on Cheju Island, South Korea. Earlier in his career he served as Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Los Altos Country Club in Los Altos, CA.
