In January 1995, David married Amy Cheatwood, whom he had met at the International House.
Amy had intended to earn a Ph.D in physics but opted to work for a master's in math.
While in Lexington, the young Dempseys were very busy. Both were working on degrees and both were teaching. Amy taught as an adjunct at the university. She also taught two years at a community college.
Both children, Daniel and Erin, were born there. Near the end of their time, when David was nearly finished with the doctoral degree, Amy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and began treatment.
Teaching experience
David had been a teaching fellow here at JSU.

In the fall of 2000 David and Amy with their children came home to teach. Amy was teaching both physics and math at JSU when her health failed. Sadly, Amy's condition worsened and she passed away about a year ago.
David's life - full and busy
David is a busy teacher and father. He teaches all the courses as they are assigned. "We rotate courses in the department. Martha McCormick is our department chairperson," says David.
