    From recycling to energy efficiency to remodeling, more churches in the Tulsa area are looking to be leading caretakers of the Earth, said Cheryl Cheadle, the area's coordinator for Blue Thumb, an Oklahoma Conservation educational program.

    "I feel like the Earth is God's, and we need to take care of it," said Cheryl Cheadle, a conservationist with the Oklahoma Conservation Commission.

    "The idea is to engage church staff and volunteers who have a spiritual interest in taking care of the Earth," she said.

    The workshop is for pastors, church staff, Sunday School teachers, elders, deacons and other church leaders, and anyone else interested in the spiritual responsibility to treat the Earth with kindness, grace and respect, according to Cheadle, a Presbyterian.

    Cheryl Cheadle, coordinator for Blue Thumb, a water pollution education program, will teach a soil painting class Oct. 27.

    "It's really about having fun with a natural resource and learning to appreciate it at the same time," she said.

    Students will take Oklahoma soils ranging in color from gray to bright red and mix them to create paints.They'll learn how to create and dry a painting, while learning about the soil, Cheadle said.

    "We're going to slip that education in there while they're having fun," she said.

    We have had requests to hold additional trainings, so this is an opportunity for more folks to get involved," said Cheryl Cheadle, Blue Thumb coordinator.

    With two days of training, volunteers will have the equipment and skills to conduct basic chemical testing on streams in their own communities.

    Cheadle said the training is good for professionals, high school students, retirees and just about anyone else interested in the program.
