Born on 28th July 1941, Professor Amrik Singh Chawla served Panjab University for more than thirty years.
After his B.Pharm and M.Pharm degrees from Banaras Hindu University in 1962 and 1963, respectively, he joined Panjab University in 1965 for his Ph.D. as a UGC Senior Research Fellow which he obtained in 1970.
Dr. A. S. Chawla joined as Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Panjab University in 1971 . He became Reader in 1979 and Professor in 1989.
Before coming to Panjab University, Dr. Chawla worked for about two years in a Pharmaceutical Company.
Professor Chawla also worked as a post-doctoral fellow of the University College, Cardiff (UK) during 1980-1982.
Professor Chawla was an eminent pharmaceutical educationist and a dedicated research scientist.
He excelled himself in the study of natural products and specialized in Erythrina alkaloids.
He had more than ninety publications to his credit which include books, book chapters and original research publications and review articles.
He produced several Ph.Ds and M.Pharms.
Professor Chawla had been Secretary of Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India.
Professor Chawla was a dedicated teacher and was loved and respected by his students.
With his very amiable nature and smiling personality he endeared himself to all his colleagues.
Professor Chawla would be long remembered for his services rendered to the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Panjab University.
