General surgeon Dr. Frantz Charles said he's really looking forward to the opening of the new surgical facilities. He said he's already performing about 80 surgical procedures annually, 60 to 70 percent of them outpatient. The hospital offers privileges to 81 physicians, many of whom operate specialty clinics through SCH.

"The new operating rooms will be much larger and have up-to-date instrumentation of all kinds," Charles said."As a doctor, I'm very excited. We will be able to be more proficient with three operating rooms. The patient will appreciate it, the surgeon will appreciate it and the community will appreciate it.It will be a source of pride."

Charles said the new facilities will allow the hospital to perform all types of endoscopic procedures and he hopes to expand the other types of surgical opportunities offered. He also said facilities will allow not only the full-time staff physicians to provide surgical care to their patients, but the specialty clinic doctors will be able to do procedures at SCH as well, meaning people can remain in their own community rather than traveling to a larger city.

"We will be able to do big, extensive, sophisticated surgical procedures," Charles said.
