  PricewaterhouseCoopers Malaysia senior executive director Jennifer Chang said that good governance was crucial as it conveyed the credibility of the Malaysian stock exchange and companies listed on it are robust, thus drawing foreign investors.
  
  "Ultimately, good corporate governance raises the profile of the country and makes foreign investors more confident, because they know they're investing in a country that's robust," she said in an interview with The Edge Financial Daily.
  
  The Budget proposals included amendments to the Malaysian Code of Corporate Governance, including incorporating qualifications criteria for directors and stricter policing of audit committees and internal audit functions.
  
  Other key introductions were the exclusion of executive directors from audit committees, mandatory internal audit functions for all public listed companies (PLCs), as well "green lane" status to companies and intermediaries practising high standards of corporate governance.
  
  Describing the measures as timely after the recent spate of company failures and non-disclosures plaguing local PLCs, Chang said . "The emphasis (of these measures) is to drive corporations forward, at the same time we have other countries in Asia competing with us and so they help to enhance Malaysia's competitiveness," she added.
  
  The impact on foreign investor confidence however, is more underlying than obvious.
  
  "On their own, they (the measures introduced in the Budget) are not going to draw in more foreign investors.Investors come in because Malaysia is rated well and so they feel secure investing here," Chang said.

  "Islamic banks, especially in the Middle East, got heavily into private equity and real estate investments, and a lot of loans may be backed by properties," notes Jennifer Chang, a partner at Pricewaterhouse Coopers in Kuala Lumpur.
