    image:Maurya Vijay ChandraMaurya Vijay Chandra graduated in Political Science (Hons.) from the University of Delhi in 1994.He earned his LLB degree in 1997.While a law student Maurya assisted Justice (Mrs.) S.K.Duggal Commission on the Classification of Prisoners, New Delhi (1996).He joined the Bar in India as an advocate in 1997 and practiced until 2002, when he was awarded the London School of Economics Human Rights Centre Scholarship for pursuing masters study in Human Rights.Currently Maurya holds Queen Mary, University of London Research Studentship (2003-06).Recently Maurya has been awarded the Socio Legal Studies Association Small Research Grant 2005 for field research in India.

    As an advocate, Maurya handled civil matters before the District Court, High Court, the Debt Recovery Tribunal and Consumer Forum; service matters and civil writ matters and public interest litigation; writs and other matters relating to educational institutions and University Laws; civil and criminal matters; cases of coal companies involving welfare legislations, land-losers' rights, land acquisition cases, environmental impact and forest conservation related cases, labour legislations etc.

    Maurya has also been associated with the "Prison Census" initiative of the Bihar State Legal Services Authority (India).Since 1999, as the secretary of Atmabodh, an NGO committed to the cause of legal aid in India, Maurya has been conceiving and overseeing implementation of legal services projects in India.

    Maurya's research and teaching interests lie in the areas of access to justice, human rights, international law, common law and comparative constitutional law.He is especially interested in examining the foundations of a "right to access to justice" under international law and the convergence between access to justice, quality of life and human rights.

    Current working title of the thesis:Indicators of Access to Justice

    Currently Maurya is researching on indicators for access to justice in the context of developing nations.He is exploring the conceptions of access to justice at the grassroots by using focus groups in India.He will examine the ramifications of these varying conceptions on development of indicators for access to justice and ultimately hopes to be able to arrive at some indicators for access to justice that reflect the experiences of common persons better than the currently available indicators.In this project he shall be relying on an inter-disciplinary approach, especially borrowing from the disciplines of sociology, politics and development studies.
