Olympia Family Theater begins its first season Thursday night with a production of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.""One of the things I love about Olympia is there is so much theater," said company co-founder Samantha Chandler, who also teaches at Olympia's Washington Middle School."For the amount of people we have living in this town, it's amazing we have three theater companies that have full seasons. But there has been nothing just for families."When I tell people I'm doing this, parents are thrilled," she added.

"We could start small and build something really important.""For me as a kid, going to theater was a really powerful and important experience," Chandler said."The imagination and the creativity you see in live theater are something that's so different from videos and TV.Sitting with other people experiencing something that's only going to happen once is a very powerful experience, whether kids think of it that way or not."The new theater company, whose debut production will be at The Midnight Sun, plans a three-play season.Plans for shows and dates are still in the works, but there will be a musical next, followed by a production aimed at older children."Right now, everything is being financed out of our own pockets," Chandler said."We'll see how this play goes and then see how big the next play can be.""Alice," of course, appeals to all ages."It's appropriate for any kid who can sit still long enough to watch crazy characters and funny interactions," Chandler said.
