DARLINGTON - When someone makes a contribution to a community like Judge A. Lee Chandler has, it's fitting to honor him in a special way.

Chandler, who retired in 1994 as Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, was presented with a resolution by Neilson and congratulatory letters from U.S.

A native of Orangeburg, Chandler served in the S.C. House of Representatives from 1973 to 1976.He was elected resident judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit.After eight years on the Circuit Court bench, he was elected associate justice of the state Supreme Court and became chief justice in 1994.

Chandler was a member of The Citadel's class of 1944 when the entire class was called to active duty in World War II.He was commissioned a second lieutenant and was wounded in action in Germany, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law and practiced law in Greenville for five years before moving to Darlington to become an active trial attorney.

He received the Order of the Palmetto from South Carolina Gov.

Active in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Chandler graduated from the Vocational Diaconate School of the Diocese of South Carolina and became an ordained deacon for servant hood ministry in 1999.

The Citadel Class of ‘44 was called into military service toward the end of their junior year. Some, including A. On Saturday, A. Lee Chandler, 85, retired chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, will speak for the Class of 1944.

On behalf of the remaining members of the Class of 1944, A. Lee Chandler, a retired South Carolina Supreme Court chief justice, spoke in admiration of the fond experiences they shared while attending The Citadel.

"Today," Chandler said, "... the Class of '44 is not 'the class that never was,' but in the hearts and minds and souls of our great Citadel family, we are the class that lives forever!"

Chandler also spoke about the school's tradition of letting alumni parents present diplomas to their graduating sons and daughters, who are known as legacy cadets.

Former S.C. Chief Justice A. Lee Chandler received the Greater Darlington Chamber of Commerce's Lifetime Achievement Award, while Malinda Schurlknight was named Citizen of the Year, Joey Saleeby was named Small Business Person of the Year and Wilson Senior Care received the Community Pride Award.

Retired S.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice A. Lee Chandler said he was so glad to go to The Citadel that he would have slept on top of the water tower in 1939-40, his knob year.

"Padgett-Thomas was typical military with all the amenities packed somewhere in the bare necessities," Chandler said.
