LUNCH AND LEARN - Jennifer Cesta, public relations coordinator for the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, provided reminders of what is available through the library for resources for businesspeople at the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce's new Lunch and Learn event held Wednesday at the Steubenville YWCA.

STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce's new Lunch and Learn series was a good place to reconnect a roomful of adult businesspeople with an old friend and useful tool: The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

Jennifer Cesta, public relations coordinator for the library, told the luncheon attendees Wednesday at the YWCA of many services that keep the library relevant in the era of Internet search engines.

The library offers access to a number of well-organized, professionally run databases. The online site, www.steubenville.lib.oh.us, brings users in touch not only with the library's catalogue of books, but also with a number of online resources.

Cesta explained the outreach to the business community is part of the ongoing effort to find what library users need and tailor the library to meet those needs. For instance, she said, a series of focus groups and questionnaires for young people found that teenagers want a food source and refreshments available in the library while they're doing research or reading. As a result, an area is being installed at the Schiappa Memorial branch on Mall Drive for vending machines.

There is a survey available at the library or online for users of the library for business.

Cesta said the library is like a secret: Something that's always there and filled with information, just waiting to be tapped.
    ...
Other examples of items available Cesta gave include the EBSCO searchable database of past magazine articles, the potential for people to be a part of book clubs online through the library such as Dear Reader, which e-mails excerpts from books each week to members; as well as e-books and audiobooks, which can be ordered online.

Cesta said there are 5.5 million items available in the library, and books can be accessed and shared among the 73 libraries of Southeast Ohio or beyond as needed.

Cesta said wireless Internet access is available at the Schiappa branch, the main downtown library on South Fourth Street and the Adena branch.Laptop users have free online access at those libraries.

There are public notaries available for document authentication services, business directories and other reference materials and the chance for businesses to make presentations about their own goods and services in seminars at the library. To schedule a presentation by a business, contact Cesta.

Cesta said the effort to reach out to the business community is part of the library's marketing efforts, to let people learn about how the library has many services available.

One indicator of the need for change to keep libraries vibrant: Cesta said the library Web site used to have a picture of a wooden card catalogue at the top to allow access to the online book database.

READY FOR EVENT - Tami Wietfeld, seated, special events and membership coordinator for the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, is planning for the first Lunch and Learn event for the chamber with Jennifer Cesta, public relations coordinator for the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.
    ...
The speaker for the first Lunch and Learn event will be Jennifer Cesta, public relations co-ordinator for the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, who will tell business people about the many free services and features available through the library that can assist businesses.
    ...
Cesta explained the chamber's new luncheon series is a good place for the library to emphasize one of its latest efforts: Concentrating on services to help businesses.

Cesta said there have always been many resources at the library that can serve businesses, but the library is trying to get the word out to businesses about what's available, as well as to learn what area business people want from the library.

"This is a perfect opportunity for the library," she said of the Lunch and Learn event.

Cesta said as part of the effort to better serve businesses, the library has a business user survey available on its Web site, www.steubenville.lib.oh.us, aimed at helping the library better identify services the business community wants.

"We began a marketing plan a few years ago, first focusing on teens and now on business, to find what the needs are so we can provide the resources," Cesta said."It's more than likely that we had the resources already."

For example, she said, businesses may access online databases through the library. She said she also is focusing on introducing more people to the Web site and its available resources.

"We have directories, business books, motivational books and more.We also hold adult lecture series during which businesses can promote themselves to the general public at the library," she said.

It will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 13 and can accommodate a maximum of 50 participants, according to Jennifer Cesta, the library's public relations coordinator.

Potential tour-goers must register and have a library card by the day of the tour, which is free. Library cards are free to Ohio residents and $5 for out-of-state families, said Cesta, who can be contacted at (740) 282-9782 for information or to register.

"We will meet at the main library at 11 a.m. From there, participants will receive directions to each person's home," Cesta explained.
    ...
"The homes are in no particular order," Cesta explained.
    ...
"Programs we offer mirror what you will find on our book shelves," Cesta said, noting that decorating and home improvement materials at the library, for example, prove popular.

The off-site programs have been organized for a number of reasons, according to Cesta. "The programs we would like to offer are not always conducive to the library facility," she said.

"For instance, two of the off-site programs were wine related - wine tasting at Valley Wine Cellar in Wintersville and a wine and cheese tasting at Coffee Cake Winery in Hopedale. Cooking demonstrations also are popular but without an oven or stove, the library is limited to what can be demonstrated. We also had a tea party at DiGregory's where Lou DiGregory showed and talked about plant care," she added

The off-site programs have been well received.

"Library customers old and new have expressed enjoyment in going to programs outside the library," Cesta said.

"They laugh when asked to raise their hands in unison to show their library card. I always try to educate, enlighten and entertain when organizing programs. Next year, we will do another series of off-site programs," Cesta said.

TORONTO - City Chamber of Commerce members attending Thursday's chamber luncheon meeting at the First Presbyterian Church were told how the Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County can help their businesses.

Jennifer Cesta, public relations coordinator for the library, told chamber members the library and its Web site were a gold mine of information that could be used to help their businesses.

"Librarians are information experts," said Cesta, adding the library is there for citizens' use. (Librarians) can help you get the information that you need. They can put you in the right direction.

"Everything we do is free," she continued."The amount of information we have is boundless."

"There are 5.5 million items in the database," Cesta said, adding most of the information can be accessed from Jefferson County library's Web site.
