Arnold Cassola, Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party, called on Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi to ensure that the thousands of resident non-Maltese EU citizens, not presently registered to vote, be given their EU right to do so in Malta and Gozo in time for the European Parliamentary elections, due in 11 months from now. -

Arnold Cassola elected
...
No one was more surprised at the result than Professor Cassola himself who in comments to The Malta Independent late last night said: "I am very surprised.I was watching the results as they came in throughout the day and I knew I was doing well.
"But I never imagined I would have drawn 19,000 votes.I had only expected some 4,000 to 5,000."
Prof. Cassola has finally secured his wish to serve after several attempts to get elected to the Maltese House of Representatives and the European Parliament.
The European Greens' secretary general said: "I was caught unawares.I received a phone call from friends who confirmed the result!"
Prof. Cassola, who holds both Maltese and Italian citizenships - thus making him eligible to contest an Italian election - ran a new constituency set up in 2001 for Italians living abroad.490 Italian expatriates did in fact vote from Malta, mostly for Berlusconi's coalition. (See figures carried under "The Malta vote")
The rumours of Prof. Cassola's success were confirmed late last night when official returns published on Italy's Ministero dell'Interno's website showed that Prof. Cassola polled 19,192 votes from the European region of expatriate voters, second to Franco Addolorato Narducci who triumphed with 28,839.

When contacted, Prof. Cassola was still soaking up the news.Asked where he derived his main support bases from, Prof. Cassola cited widespread support throughout the European constituency including the Asian territories of the Russian Federation and Turkey, with the exception of Italy.
Prof. Cassola, who received the news while staying at friends in Rome where he has been following the electoral process, was still not in possession of detailed voting results, but believed he had secured a number of firsts - among which were in London, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Romania, Slovenia and Dublin.
"Once it's all over I'll be in a better position to analyse the details, but I am curious to see how Malta voted.I know that some 160 Italian residents in Malta voted for l'Unione, some of whom also wrote a candidate's name in addition to indicating their party of choice."
In 2004 Prof. Cassola had contested Malta's European parliamentary election, garnering some 29,000 votes and being narrowly defeated at the polls.
Prof. Cassola will assume office on 28 April, when the new Italian House of Representatives holds its first session.
Asked how his election will affect his position as the European Green's secretary general, Prof. Cassola explains that this, his third and last possible term in the position by virtue of the party's statute, draws to an end at the end of June.
Prof. Cassola, who is also a spokesperson for Alternattiva Demokratika, had consistently downplayed his prospects at the Italian polls.
Interviewed by this newspaper in January this year soon after he announced he had been asked to sign on with Prodi's l'Unione campaign as a Green candidate, he summed up his expectations: "I think one has to keep one's feet on the ground and be realistic.
...
Prof. Cassola's strong European and Green Party background undoubtedly provided him with a winning edge among expatriate Italians in Europe.
Asked on what criteria he was invited to run as the l'Unione's Green candidate, Prof. Cassola had explained, "The constituency is of such a broad scope that the coalition was looking for a person who represents not only the national, but also the European spirit and mentality."
"Candidates will be trying to pick up votes from areas ranging from the borders with Iraq and Iran, to Turkey, Siberia, Iceland, Portugal and Cyprus.Given that, my candidature was tabled mainly because of the European background that I have," he had said.

Friends of the Earth (Malta) are backing Alternattiva Demokratika's Professor Arnold Cassola as the candidate with the best Green credentials for the EU parliamentary elections on 12 June.
Cassola is the candidate that can best represent Malta's interest when it comes to the environment, indeed the other political parties have a long way to go before deserving to be called pro-environment parties.
Those Maltese that wish to see an improved environment should vote for Cassola, Friends of the Earth Malta said.
