   "Plus the early starting of school didn't help any," said Mike Cassio, general manager of the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre. Cassio said he lost more than 20 employees in ten days towards the end of August. "And we're just not replacing them," he said. "It's getting worse all the time - every year." Cassio said the problem wouldn't be as severe if more colleges allowed students to work through the entire tourism season to earn credit towards some kind of certification in the hospitality industry. But it's not only students that aren't sticking with hospitality jobs. Even steps taken by the Sawridge, including increasing wages and benefits and dropping employees' rent in staff accommodations to make the jobs more attractive, still aren't drawing enough staff. Also, having employees sign contracts does little to keep workers since not all workers honour them. "The onus is on us to stand behind what we sign, but unfortunately the employees just do what they want," said Cassio. Although Cassio wasn't sure what's causing the labour shortage, he suggested that the lure of city life and the benefits of employment insurance could be factors.
