   Former Police Commissioner Joseph P. Cassino was born on Oak Street in the city of Yonkers on August 14, 1944. He was a typical youngster who grew up at 4 Van Cortland Park Avenue. A boy scout in his youth, he attended Holy Trinity elementary school and later would graduate from Sacred Heart High School. Commissioner Cassino admitted that he remembers always wanting to be a police officer and serve the public. He had excellent role models with his father being a Yonkers Fire Department Lieutenant, and his brother being a Lieutenant with the N.Y. State Police. In future years Joseph Cassino would go on to earn an Associates degree from Westchester Community College in 1968, a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science from Mercy College in 1971, and had done graduate work through the University of Virginia.
   
   Upon his appointment to the Yonkers Police Department on September 24,1965 with an annual salary of $5,880 a year, Cassino was assigned to walk a foot post in the 4th precinct. In the spring of 1969 he was detailed to work as an undercover narcotics officer and was placed on "loan" to the New Rochelle P.D. to make undercover narcotic "buys". Over a four month period he was very successful and as a result, multiple narcotic related arrests were made.
