According to Thomas Cassidy, former special investigator with the New York State Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, many of the issues involved are unsafe, unethical and even illegal. Cassidy tells of numerous unfortunate incidences in his book Elder Care : What to Look For, What to Look Out For.He says, i have seen too many seniors sacrificed for their fortunes, describing patterns of negligence, improper care and, most importantly, greed.

While most people prefer to live out their lives at home with dignity, for many families this is too inconvenient and takes too long.An assisted-living residence or nursing home may well be a family's best or only option.

Cassidy offers several suggestions.Among them, to avoid becoming the victim of a home-care worker :.

Inventory valuables and put them in a safe place.Remove temptations such as cash, jewelry, checkbooks, credit cards and bank accounts.Insist that home-care workers fill out an employment application (including their home address, phone number, references, all degrees and license numbers, etc.).

Elder Care: What to Look For, What to Look Out For! is by Thomas M. Cassidy, a former senior special investigator for the New York State Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.

Published by New Horizon Press (PO Box 669, Far Hills, NJ 07931-0669) the book is only $14.95, but for anyone with an aging parent or for anyone who is a senior citizen, Cassidy's twenty years of experience investigating crimes against elder citizens is evident on every page.As the older population grows, so do the numbers of people who prey on them, stealing their life's earnings and worse. Some in so-called retirement homes are beaten and drugged. This is an important book and I only wish Cassidy could get some television coverage for it and himself to get his message out to as many people as possible.
