Dr. Cassidy owned and operated the Monticello Veterinary Practice, where he practiced large and small animal health. He served as veterinarian at the Monticello Sales Barn for many years. He retired in 1985.
He was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School in Cedar Rapids and a 1938 graduate of Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science with a degree in veterinary medicine. He served in the Army as a meat inspector from 1940 to 1946, attaining the rank of major.
Among his many interests were Tennessee Walking Horses, harness horse racing, raising and showing Bedlington terriers and Psittacan parrots, including his 44–year–old African gray.
