   D.C. lobbyist and longtime Silber advisor Gerald S. J. Cassidy is largely speculated to have pushed strongly for Goldin's selection. Cassidy, a newly elected BU Trustee as of last February, is also the head of Cassidy and Associates, the powerful lobbying firm Goldin worked for in 2002 after leaving NASA.
   
   According to Boston Globe staff writer Patrick Healy, Cassidy sat in on one of Goldin's interviews with the search committee.

   "Afterward, Cassidy spent an additional half-hour with the search committee, 'offering personal assurances, based on knowing the guy, that tried to counter any uncertainties or negative impressions,' one search committee member said in an interview . . . Cassidy's role was deemed inappropriate by two committee members, given his ties to Silber" (Boston Globe, 7/9/03).
