Hawke's Bay road transport spokesman Garth Cassidy, of Waipukurau, said the move would make roads safer for all motorists.
"Trucks are moving along smoother and quicker, and roads are designed to take faster speeds," he said.
"Trucks travelling at 80 to 85km/h tend to impede the traffic."
While trucks figured in the fatal crash statistics, it was not often they were travelling at high speed, and it was more often that other vehicles had run into trucks.
Mr Cassidy said truck firms imposed their own operating controls on drivers in addition to the laws. -

Hawke's Bay Road Transport Association spokesman Garth Cassidy said 45 trucks used the gorge yesterday and a similar number went through in the first hour today.
Mr Cassidy, who is part of the RTA monitoring team, said he thought the gorge was still unsafe in places, particularly at the Woodville side because there was no where for waiting trucks to queue.
