A. Lorne Cassidy: The School
The sod for the new school was turned on Tuesday, February 13, 1991. That was the day the shovels first turned over the ground on the empty site.
The full formal name is A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School. Before it had its formal name, the school was known as the New Crossing Bridge School.
A. Lorne Cassidy: The Man
A. Lorne Cassidy grew up in Goulbourn Township. He was an educator his whole life. His first teaching job was in Goulbourn Township and his last role in education was with the Carleton Board of Education. Because he was a native of Goulbourn Township, and because he was involved in education his whole life, the Carleton Board of Education decided to name our school after him. He attended Queen's University in Kingston and then attended the University of Toronto where he earned his teaching certificate. He taught in several towns and cities, including Goulbourn Township where he was a teacher from 1947 to 1950. He was promoted into the role of Vice-Principal and then Principal in the city of Kingston. Eventually he became an inspector of schools, a position now known as Superintendent. Lorne was said to have loved children and was particularly good with children who had special needs. He received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ontario Council for Exceptional Children for his service to the exceptional children of the province. As an official with the Carleton Board of Education, he helped to establish the Crystal Bay School for the Trainable Mentally Retarded and Sir Guy Carleton High School. Lorne Cassidy's family and friends arranged to have the school's picture made from a photograph. It was presented to the school by the family.
