Williams College appoints Julie Cassiday as its Gaudino Scholar

    - May 04, 2006

Williams College President Morton Owen Schapiro has announced the appointment of Julie A. Cassiday, associate professor of Russian, as the college's Gaudino Scholar.
    ...
As Gaudino Scholar, Cassiday will succeed James McAllister, associate professor of political science, who has served in this role since 2004.
    ...
"Since I'm primarily a teacher of foreign language and culture, I'm very interested in focusing my energies as Gaudino Scholar on questions that take students and faculty members outside of the sphere of U.S. domestic affairs" Cassiday said.
    ...
Cassiday currently teaches courses on Russian language, literature, and culture, including the works of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. She is also a member of the college's Program in Comparative Literature.

Her research focuses on various aspects of Russian literature and culture, including theatre and drama. She has published articles in such journals as the Slavic Review, Slavonic and East European Review, and the Russian Review. Northern Illinois University Press published her book, "The Enemy on Trial: Early Soviet Courts on Stage and Screen."

She has been a fellow at the college's Francis Christopher Oakley Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences and a research scholar in Moscow with the American Councils of Teachers of Russian.

Cassiday earned her B.A. in 1986 from Grinnell College and her Ph.D. in 1995 at Stanford University, where she was awarded a Mabelle McLeod Lewis Memorial Dissertation Fellowship.

She joined the Williams faculty in 1994.
