    March 26, 2006 - I AM WILSHIRE - SARAH CASSIDA
    ...
Sarah Cassida is thoroughly West Texan. She was born in Lubbock and lived there until age 23, when she and her husband, Justin, moved to Dallas. It was almost a given for her to attend Texas Tech University, the alma mater of her mother and older sister. There she was a cheerleader and held several positions in her sorority, including chair of the standards board (which handles disciplinary actions), chaplain and president. Majoring in public relations and minoring in marketing, Cassida was involved in a public relations society at Tech and expected to join an agency after graduation. "My goal was to work for a non-profit agency," she said, "but that didn't happen." In her junior year, she began working with the youth group at her home church, Second Baptist of Lubbock. There her college studies came in handy. "I used my public relations skills to plan, promote and organize events," she said. After graduation, she took a full-time position there. The Cassidas met at church and began dating during her sophomore year. They were married after she graduated in 2002, and they stayed in Lubbock an additional year so that Justin could complete a dual master's degree. They moved to Dallas in the summer of 2003, when he accepted a job with Carter Financial Management, a financial planning firm. She found a position with Plains Capital Bank in downtown Dallas. The bank was founded in Lubbock, another connection to West Texas. For two years, she worked in human resources, taking some human-resources generalist assignments but mostly functioning as a recruiter. In June 2005, she joined her husband's firm. As a client services associate, she now works with a senior financial planner, but the Cassidas have an interesting game plan. "Eventually we plan to work together with the same clients," she said. At present she "does almost everything," she said.
    ...
However, they didn't join for about a year because they first "wanted to get to know people outside our Sunday School class," Cassida said. The fact that Wilshire is a CBF church was especially appealing to them. For Cassida, Wilshire "felt like the church I grew up in, so I immediately felt comfortable." The Cassidas are mentors for the YourCall program for Wilshire's youth who are exploring careers in ministry. They are outreach coordinators for Genesis Class and serve as greeters on Sunday mornings. Recently they had their first experience as ninth-grade leaders for DiscipleNow. "It was fun to do together," she said. She is a member of pastoral resident Sean Allen's lay mentoring committee (even though she's a little younger than he is) and began teaching second grade Globetrekkers last fall. Cassida especially appreciates Wilshire's warmth. "It's just special," she said. She looks forward to getting involved in other activities and "to growing spiritually and deepening our relationships and support systems."
