The Mississippi Arts Commission's Whole Schools Initiative is a fantastic program that's been a big hit in other parts of the state but has been slow to get started in South Mississippi, said Sandra Cassibry of Wiggins, one of many artists and educators on the agenda during this week's WSI annual Summer Institute in Hattiesburg.
As an art teacher and visual arts educational consultant for Crayola, Cassibry works in conjunction with the arts commission to hold workshops that show teachers how to use art in the classroom.
About eight years ago, Cassibry was the art teacher at West Elementary School when it became one of the initiative's founding schools. It eventually completed its five-year grant that provided instruction in visual arts, drama, dance and music.
"It's a very intricate, complicated, awesome program," Cassibry said of the Whole School Initiative."We are one of very few states in the whole nation that received a federal grant" for its funding.
The comprehensive program involves curriculum tracks, Cassibry said, "that often have nothing to do with the arts per se, such as integrating arts, writing curriculum, multiple intelligence theories and brain research theories.
