BNIM Principal Recognized for Significant Contributions to Profession of Architecture and the Social, Economic and Environmental Vitality of Communities

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Feb. 29, 2008)â€"BNIM Architects today announced that the American Institute of Architects has elevated Charles S. (Casey) Cassias, Jr. to its prestigious College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the profession.Cassias is the only architect in the 5 state region to receive this honor in 2008.The AIA Kansas City chapter will hold a celebration party on June 10 to honor Cassias and the recent winners of other awards in the field of architecture.

A leader at BNIM and with local and professional communities, Cassias' advancements in collaboration, project delivery and sustainable design have elevated the standards for design and performance. For the highly-acclaimed Bloch Building at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, he orchestrated the complex but seamless collaborative effort needed to achieve the level of excellence that Steven Holl's brilliant design demanded.Other successful firm collaborations led by Cassias include award-winning projects with Pei Cobb Freed, Anshen + Allen, and, currently, Moshe Safdie.
    ...
For more than 33 years, Cassias has demonstrated in a real way that collaborations can make a project successful, and that the whole truly can be greater than the sum of the parts.

"Casey is relentless in challenging the status quo and leading the shift in thinking within our firm, and has a proven record creating new methodologies, tools and solutions to meet the challenges of the 21st century," said Bob Berkebile.
    ...
Cassias emerged as an early leader in the creation of sustainable design approaches, tools and strategies. He was one of the authors of the resolution Critical Planet Rescue (CPR), which was presented and approved by the 1989 AIA Convention in St. Louis. Many attribute this event as the birth of the sustainable design movement, and its contribution to the creation of the AIA's Committee on the Environment (COTE) is unquestionable. The following year Casey chaired the first AIA Regional Conference on Environmental/Sustainable Design and recruited a diverse group of presenters, including Amory Lovins and Andreas Duany, to launch a proactive Central States dialogue.
    ...
The same year Casey oversaw the creation sustainable design guidelines for the comprehensive restorative master plan for the Kansas City Zoological Gardens and the plan's 23 architectural projects. One of these projects, the Deramus Education Pavilion, was an early recipient of an AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project Award in 1999, the first of the firm's four AIA COTE awards to date.

"Whether forging remarkably effective collaborative teams to transform complex design challenges into celebrated innovative built environments, marshalling the energy and imagination of fellow architects to recognize the urgent need for sustainable design, or selflessly investing in the development of students and young graduates, Cassias has demonstrated rare gifts, steady determination and grace," added Eugene Kremer, Former Dean, Kansas State University, School of Architecture, Planning and Design.
    ...
Throughout his career, Cassias has generously contributed his time and talent to a variety of community activities and non-profit organizations. He served on the board of Don Bosco Centers and Wildwood Outdoor Education. In addition, he has completed projects as a volunteer for Della C. Lamb, American Red Cross, MOCSA, Ronald McDonald House and Heart of America Boy Scouts.

Cassias is currently lead architect for BNIM for the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts, a project designed by Moshe Safdie.
