Giles Cassels eBay (www.ebay.com), the online auction site, has emerged as perhaps the premier player in the world of Internet sales. The company boasts nearly half a billion dollars in annual musical merchandise trade and over 85 million community members worldwide. While some merchants view Internet platforms such as eBay strictly as another form of "competition," other businesses are embracing the many prospects provided by e-sales.
"Right now, we're doing about 450 million dollars in gross musical instrument merchandise sales, annually," explains Giles Cassels, eBay's general manager, Musical Instruments.
...
"MI sales are huge for us across the board," says Cassels.
...
"We started talking shortly after winter NAMM last year," Cassels says of the relationship between the two companies.
...
"They've taken a unique approach," Cassels adds.
...
"One of the interesting things about eBay is that people don't necessarily sell under the same brand as their retail outlet," says Cassels.
...
"Those kinds of things are actually a very rare occurrence on eBay," explains Cassels. "One of the things that keeps the eBay platform honest - and I think of this as our ‘secret sauce' - is our feedback system, which allows all the buyers and sellers to rate each other."
Those participating in the bidding/auction process on eBay can review the comments for the individual or organization they're doing business with to safeguard against shady transactions. "That way," Cassels continues, "if a buyer is interested in making a purchase, they can look at a seller's feedback rating and that's going to let them know whether that seller is a reputable person to deal with.
"One of the things that we're trying to do, and you'll see more of this very shortly, is to introduce buying guides and instrument overviews and definitions of products [that are being sold]. We want to make sure that we have a buying environment that's very brightly lit and makes the buyers feel very comfortable dealing with the individual sellers and the retailers that are coming to the site."
As eBay's impact on the MI market continues to expand, the company is eager to connect with traditional retailers and be seen as a resource - not as a threat. "One of the things that we're really trying to do right now is to get the message out that this is a great marketplace for retailers to be a part of. With the economy bad and sales kind of slumping, access to more than 85 million community members isn't anything to sneeze at, "offers Cassels."
